How Often Should You Actually Deep Clean Your Home?
A room-by-room schedule with the deep-clean triggers we look for in our own clients' homes, and the few things you can safely stretch out.
March 22, 2026
The honest answer is: it depends. A 1,200 sq ft condo with two adults and a cat doesn't need the same deep clean cadence as a 3,000 sq ft family home with two kids and a golden retriever. After eight years of cleaning Calgary homes, here's the schedule we actually use.
The quick frequency table
Treat this as a starting point, most homes drift toward more frequent attention in the first year of a kid or pet, then settle.
- Kitchen deep clean (inside oven, fridge, behind appliances, grout): every 3 months for cooking households; every 6 months for low-cook households.
- Bathroom deep clean (grout, caulk, shower track, behind toilet): every 2 months.
- Baseboards & trim: every 3 months.
- Window interiors & tracks: twice a year, spring and fall.
- Inside cabinets & drawers: once a year, when you do your seasonal swap.
- Ceiling fans, vent covers, light fixtures: twice a year.
- Carpet & upholstery (professional): once a year for most homes; twice if you have pets or allergies.
Triggers we watch for
Calendar cadence is a guide. The real signals that a deep clean is overdue:
- The baseboards look fuzzy against the wall. That's settled dust, and it's also where allergens accumulate.
- You can write in the grease on top of the range hood or above the cabinets.
- The shower grout has darkened from cream to grey, early-stage mildew, easy to address now and a pain in two months.
- The vent covers are visibly dusty from the doorway. If you can see it standing up, your HVAC has been circulating it.
- The toilet base smells faintly even right after a regular clean. That's deposit at the floor joint that a recurring wipe won't touch.
What you can safely stretch
A few things people over-clean:
- Hardwood floor refinishing or oiling. Once a year is plenty for most floors. Daily microfiber and the right pH-neutral cleaner does the real work.
- Mattress steaming. Annually for non-allergy homes, twice a year for allergy households.
- Stone counter sealing. If water still beads, the sealer is working. Usually 12–18 months on quartzite, sometimes longer.
Where we come in
